NUSTART is a 12-week induction programme that will help set you up for success at UKNNL. Each week is themed around a different part of our working life and has a set of tasks and activities to help you understand how we work. You will also be invited to attend a NUSTART induction workshop where you can meet and get to know other colleagues, expand your knowledge and meet some of our executive team.
Throughout NUSTART you will be asked to complete a number of mandatory e-learning courses. You may have spotted these in your course list when logging into e-learning. On completion of NUSTART you'll have completed all the mandatory training that is required to make you an UKNNL worker.
Make sure you only complete the e-learning when you are instructed to do so in the induction. You might get email alerts from Business World asking you to complete your training earlier, but you can disregard them whilst you complete your induction training. If you're not sure what to do contact the L&D team for advice.
If you have any questions or are unsure about what to do next, feel free to reach out to the Learning & Development (L&D) team for assistance.
To help you get started on your laptop or PC this week, here's some handy information that you will need to get set up.
If you forget your password, Service Desk will need to verify your identity first before being able to reset your password for you. To do this an application called FastPass is used, the below link will take you to a guide which will show you how to set up your security questions.

Folders that you regularly access on our network are not automatically saved to your laptop. It is recommended that you use the ‘Pin to Quick access’ option as a means of easily accessing them after initial access is provided.
Follow the instructions below to pin shared folders to your machine:
You can find guides to using our systems and hardware on the IT Training Site here. If you need any additional software or hardware in your role, you should speak to your line manager first to discuss your requirements and get approval for the purchase. You can then request software or hardware through the service portal, which you will learn more about in the next step.
If you haven’t completed all the activities above, please contact the Learning and Development team on 01925 944 831. You won’t be able to progress this week's induction until all activities are completed.
Let us re-introduce ourselves – read our short guide to UKNNL.
Each of our sites is home to a diverse mix of teams. You can learn more about the work we do and the communities based at each site in the PDFs below.
Our values and behaviours are at the heart of everything we do. Our values Safety, Customer, Integrity, Taking responsibility, Enthusiasm and Collaboration reflect how we do business and steer our day-to-day operations.
Our behaviours are how we demonstrate our core values in our day-to-day actions. It’s what others see and hear from us and it’s what our personal, team and organisational reputation is founded on. Our behaviours express what good looks like at UKNNL.
Safety is one of our core values and is inherent in everything we do. We expect everyone to take ownership for the safety, health and wellbeing of themselves and each other.

Our values and behaviours underpin everything we do, ensuring we deliver our purpose ‘nuclear science to benefit society’ with integrity and in an environment that fosters an open and collaborative approach.
UKNNL’s Code of Conduct sets out the high-level principles that underpin our values and the way we conduct our business. We expect everyone working at or alongside UKNNL to observe our code of conduct and our values and behaviours.
Our standard full-time working week is 39 hours, exclusive of lunch breaks. Each team will generally have their own local working patterns that are driven by site working hours, the type of role each person does and the nature of their work. Your manager will talk to you about the current working arrangements applicable to your team. Please accurately record all the hours you work as it helps us support your health and safety in the workplace.
We operate a flexible working system across the business. Any time worked over 39 hours is counted as ‘flex time’. Flex time can be taken up to a maximum of three hours per day and is subject to approval by your line manager. Flex time cannot be converted into annual leave and all balances are reset at the end of the financial year. If your balance is below 7.8 hours, your flexi balance will be retained. Any balance higher than this will be reset to a starting value of 7.8.
Lunch breaks are 45 minutes. It’s important for your health and wellbeing that you prioritise your lunch breaks. We have kitchens, canteens and seating areas for use during breaks. If you do work from home, take lunch away from your desk or go for walks if you are able.
You will be paid on the 15th of each month or earlier if the 15th falls on a weekend or bank holiday. Pay is based on two weeks in arrears and two weeks in advance. If you have any questions about your pay, please contact NNL.Payroll@uknnl.com. Pay slips are electronic and stored on Business World. Business World is UKNNL’s enterprise resource planning system that is used to manage business processes and data. You will learn more about Business World, along with how to access your payslip next week. Take a moment to follow the instructions below and check your bank details are correct in Business World.
Annual leave entitlement for new employees is 25.5 days (or pro rata equivalent) per year (from 1st October to 30th September). As well as your annual leave, you are also entitled to eight bank holidays, plus four accrued days which are to be used as directed by UKNNL (usually around the Christmas/New Year bank holidays). All annual leave must be approved by line managers in advance of it being taken. You can carry over 10 days of annual leave from one leave year to the next. Five days’ annual leave can be advanced from the upcoming holiday year if you should need it. Special leave is available to cover certain circumstances, such as bereavement.
If you are unwell and unable to work, please contact your line manager before 9am to let them know along with the reason for your absence and how long you expect to be absent for.
All absences are managed through Business World and you will learn how to view and book leave in next week's topic. We cover more information about our HR policies and processes in Week 12. If you do have a query in the meantime, you can contact the HR Support Team on 01925 933692 or their email inbox nnl.hr.support@uknnl.com.
Reasonable adjustments are changes made by an employer to remove or reduce any workplace disadvantages related to a disability. These adjustments help individuals manage their disability, condition, or symptoms in the workplace, allowing everyone to perform at their best.
We encourage all employees to inform their line manager if they have a long-term health condition, so we can provide the right support and adjustments. Employees can complete a Reasonable Adjustment Agreement, which can serve as a foundation for discussing current and future adjustments they may need. Alternatively, employees are welcome to discuss their needs directly with HR if they prefer.
For more details on reasonable adjustments and our attendance policy, please visit the Attendance Support Policy Hub.
Timesheets are managed through Business World and should be submitted by 12pm on a Friday (or earlier if you are on leave, or work part time). Watch this video to learn how to complete and submit your timesheet on business world. You can use the timesheet template below to help calculate your hours into decimals and keep track of your time.
